The Magi and the Star

There are many common and beloved Christmas customs such as the holly, the mistletoe, the Yule-log, the Chrismas tree and the Santa Claus. However they are all connected with some man-made rite or tradition that has little or nothing to do with the Bible. Most of them are from heathen cultures and others are mere fantasies.

So I picked a scene which has firm Biblical bases, depicting the wise men riding on camels and following a star. (Click images to enlarge.)

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:1–2)

Those wise men, or the Magi, was the only ones who saw the star or at least the only ones who understood its meaning. And the star, which led the wise men and stood over where the Christ child was, is indeed very mystical.

Those magicians from the East and the holy star above make one of the most fascinting and quaint images in the Bible. I tried to make this sculpture to be looked like an object of high antiquity out of LEGO.

호랑가시나무, 겨우살이 또는 장작으로 만든 크리스마스 장식품이나 크리스마스 트리, 산타클로스 등은 우리에게 무척 친숙한 여러가지 크리스마스 풍습들이다. 하지만, 이러한 풍습들의 기원을 찾아보면 모두 성경과는 무관한 이교도의 풍습이거나 아니면 상상력이 만들어낸 허구에 지나지 않는다.

그래서 성경과 관련이 없는 풍습보다는 성경에 언급이 되어있는 동방박사와 별에 관련된 장면을 주제로 골랐다.

헤롯왕 때에 예수께서 유대 베들레헴에서 나시메 동방으로부터 박사들이 예루살렘에 이르러 말하되, 유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시뇨 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라 하니 (마태복음 2:1-2)

동방박사는 어쩌면 그 별을 본 유일한 사람이거나 적어도 별의 의미를 이해한 유일한 사람이다. 그리고 동방박사를 이끌고 아기예수의 위치를 알려준 그 별은 참으로 신령스러운 존재가 아닐 수 없다.

동방박사와 그의 별과 관련된 이 이야기는 성경의 내용 중에서도 가장 매력적이고도 진귀한 장면 중 하나이므로, 마치 고대 유물처럼 보이도록 예스러운 분위기로 만들어보았다.
